We add the wall area (perimeter × ceiling height) to the ceiling area (length × width, if included), subtract any door and window area, then add your waste allowance and divide by the sheet size. Sheets are always rounded up.

The materials list uses standard coverage rules: about one 4.5-gallon box of joint compound per 475 sq ft, roughly 400 ft of tape per 1,000 sq ft, and about 32 screws per sheet. They're starting estimates — buy a little extra and check product labels.

The ceiling adds length × width of drywall — often four to six extra sheets for an average room. If you're boarding it, keep "include the ceiling" checked so both the sheet count and the finishing materials come out right.
A standard door or window doesn't save a whole sheet, and the offcuts rarely reuse cleanly, so deducting them can leave you short. Only subtract large openings — a garage door or a wall of glass — and treat small ones as part of your waste allowance.
On walls longer than 8 ft, 4 × 12 sheets mean fewer butt seams to tape and float, and a flatter finish. If you can get the longer sheets home and handle them, they're usually worth it.
Sheets are only half the job. Joint compound, tape, and screws are what actually finish the wall — buy them together from the materials list so you're not stopping mid-project for another store run.
Find the wall and ceiling area, add a waste allowance (10% is typical), and divide by the sheet area. A 4 × 8 sheet covers 32 sq ft. For a 12 × 14 ft room with an 8 ft ceiling (584 sq ft including the ceiling) that's about 21 sheets of 4 × 8 with 10% waste.
As a rule of thumb, one 4.5-gallon box of ready-mix compound covers about 475 sq ft of drywall for taping plus two finish coats, and you need roughly 400 ft of joint tape per 1,000 sq ft. The calculator estimates both from your area — confirm against the product label.
If you're drywalling the ceiling too, leave 'Include the ceiling' checked — it adds length × width to the area. For walls only, uncheck it. You can also subtract doors and windows by entering their total square footage.
10% is a common default and covers cuts and offcuts on a simple rectangular room. Use 15% for rooms with lots of openings, angles, or short walls where more material ends up as scrap.
On most 8 ft walls, hang sheets horizontally — two 4 ft-wide sheets stack to 8 ft, which means fewer seams, a stronger wall, and the main seam sits at a comfortable waist height to finish. Vertical hanging is mainly for walls taller than 8 ft.
Half-inch is standard for interior walls. Use 5/8 inch on ceilings (it resists sagging) and where you want extra fire or sound resistance, and 1/4 inch for curved surfaces. Thickness doesn't change the sheet count, just what you buy.
About 32 screws per 4 × 8 sheet on walls — roughly every 16 inches in the field and 8 inches along the edges. Ceilings use more, about every 12 inches. The calculator estimates screws from your sheet count.
